Where Ugliness Meets Your Sweater

There is a lot of ugliness in this world that we can either choose to ignore or look into our selves and see what we can do change it from within. This Friday is Ugly Sweater Friday and I am hosting the party before the New Year in hopes of bringing about some change. Inside each of us there is something ugly that is covering up something beautiful. We wear the ugly sweater to symbolically put the our demons out where all can see them there by holding ourselves accountable to make the change.

As we head into the season of resolution my hope is that each and everyone of us change something that really matters in our hearts. I for one will be wearing my biggest demon out in the open this Friday…You may not know this about me but, I tend to buck the system in the name of what I believe is right…I know its hard for you to believe that shy quiet me would ever find a reason to stand up against “the man” so I can voice my opinion and prove the “the other side” is wrong… but Its true and I want to make a change!

This year’s goal is to live and let live. People do and say things that I do not agree with all of the time and they have every right to live their life as they see fit. My sweater is going to represent the curmudgeon that seems to be hardwired inside of me. This year I will replace him with a happy go lucky kindred spirit that is excited for someone that has a different point of view.

Ok I put mine out there and on my sweater…Now its your turn to name your demon and make a change even if its only a small one!

See you this Friday with your Ugly Sweater!

The Confrontation

For this Friday I stole a teaching technique from my aunt who is an art teacher. She believes that both sides of the brain require attention in order for someone to truly become an artist. The two sides typically work like confronting personas in a multiple personality situation. There are certain techniques one can employ to let both sides work as one. It is my believe that dancing is an art form therefore if you dance you are an artist and should be taught as one!

The technical half of your brain evaluates what you are doing and extrapolates the data. Right and wrong, black and white, good and bad all happen on this side of your brain.

The artistic side of your brain sees everything’s value in the form of energy. Life is captured as a series of very vivid 3 diminutional pictures. This side knows where to go and how to get there entirely by feel. There is no timeline, no right, and no wrong just energy coming and going.

Since you can’t teach the technical side of an art form to the artistic side of the brain nor can you force the number crunching side to be creative how do we get the information into our bodies using both sides? Both sides of our brains make up who we are and so both sides must be feed in order to process information optimally.

We crunch numbers all day every day making the analytical side of our brain comfortable being dominant. While we are learning an art form this becomes a problem because that is the side of the brain where right and wrong live. How can we step outside the box if we have a little voice in our head yelling “WRONG!!!!” at every missed step? Our first mission is to strengthen the artistic side so that we can traverse from interpretation to evaluation safely and have enough strength left to get back to interpretation.

This lesson Plan is very unique and even more fun…See you:

New Dance Spot

This week I am teaching at a new spot in Windham, NH Tuesday night. Youth Storm has a large building there and have asked me to make a go at a WCS program in Southern New Hampshire. This group has done classes with me before so I don’t expect the class to be too basic but I am always ready to accommodate new dancers. The venue is a little rough around the edges but there is a metric ton of parking and its in a great area…I hope you will join us.

Friday is Slick pattern night. Sometimes its important to stretch your wings and try something that is cool for the sake of being cool. I think you are going to love it!

My Return From “Living Legends of Swing”

That is right I am back from a swing dance event known as the “Living Legends of Swing”. This event is an invite only event and the only way to get on the list is to be invited by a Living Legend or to be one (you have to be over 55 to be in the running). I was invited by not one but two Living Legends and then went on to dance with 25 more…The dancing, the music, and the lack of attitude made this event the highlight of my year!

I learned so much while I was down there that I could possibly fit it in one sitting. Some of it is not for publishing (Those tidbits are reserved only for my students that are in my lessons on the weeks that the tidbits apply)…Some of it is musical (the music was in the WOW category)…Some I need to digest before I can even begin to write it down.

This Friday I am bringing in my demo partner Kirsten Obermiller (seen in this video< click the word video>) to help teach a distancing and connection concept through a pattern that I scooped up from my good friend John Festa. There is a lot going on for both leaders and followers so I am calling in the Calvary. Kirsten and I have only danced about a dozen times but she can connect so well that we never needed a “get to know you dance”. We just jumped into full on swing dance number 1!

Don’t run late for this week’s lesson or you will not get everything that you want out of it. Most of the good stuff is right at the beginning. The level for this week’s lesson is advanced beginner so as long as you have taken at least 5 classes in WCS you should be more than fine.

Chicken Soup for the Wrestler’s Soul

Since the beginning of time man has relied on the healing powers of food when he has taken ill. Potions of roots and berries with a pinch of this or that boiled over an open flame while chanting under ones breath may conjure up visions of witch craft to most but a recent experience made me a believer.

My story starts off with an interview of none other than Nikolai Volkoff…yes the wrestler. During the interview, on The Cigar Authority, the topic of the 6’8’’ behemoth’s diet and exercise regiment came up. At 68 years old he was in great shape, he was still wrestling, had never broken a bone, and is almost never sick. The secret for him is simple and makes all of the sense in the world. Nicolai only eats whole foods…Not the chain of overpriced super markets…He eats the food as nature intended.

Mr. Volkoff painted a picture for us of the cave man and how he might hunt or gather his food and then how he might prepare it. If he happened upon a wild crop of root vegetables would he waste his time removing the skin? If he spent his time and energy to hunt and kill a bird would he throw away the dark meat, the skin, or the bones? The answer is of course…a resounding no! He would use every possible part of every edible item. What was left over ended up in a soup pot to draw every last droplet of nutrients out of his food. This, in Volkoff’s estimation, had an unintended consequence by way of some serious health benefits. Without even counting the amount of processed foods and empty calories that we eat daily, he guesses that we throw away more than half of our vitamins and minerals by skinning our meats and vegetables.

What he was saying made a ton of sense but I needed to push further. “What do you eat when you do get sick?” Was how I opened Pandora’s box.
“Like your Grandmother used to make…Chicken Soup!” was his reply with slight twinkle in his eye. He went on to tell about a certain recipe for chicken soup that he says will cure everything from the common cold to cancer. That’s right this professional wrestler says he has the cure and his proof is what the soup did for his sister’s dog.

Apparently she had a dog with a large tumor growing out of his hind leg up by its tail. Her vet was ready to put the dog down but Nicolai was not ready to give up so easy. He brought the dog home and made a soup of:

1 Small organic chicken
1 Medium Onion
A bag of organic spinach
½ cup of freshly shredded ginger
½ cup of freshly shredded organic carrots
At least 1 clove of freshly minced garlic

Cook the chicken with the skin on and when it cools you remove the meat to be added in later. Boil the carcass, skin, neck, the whole chicken… on low for an hour or so with the garlic, ginger, onion, and carrots. Strain out all of the large pieces saving the broth. Over a low heat add the spinach and the meat that you saved. Keep it covered and at a soft boil for 30 minutes… salt and pepper to taste.

He feed the dog this soup as a last ditched effort to save its life and to everyone’s amazement the tumor slowly shrunk and the dog lived an extra couple of years.

Fast forward to 1 month ago, I worked 4, 16 hour days in a row and got myself more than a little run down. That Monday I found myself in the throes of a full blown cold. Thinking back to my interview with Nikolai I whipped up a batch of his “Cure-All Soup”. I figured what harm could it cause? In the worst case scenario my cold would run its typical 7 day course and I would have had some hot and homemade soup.
Tuesday morning when I woke up I was at 80% healthy. My head was clear, I had only a little sniffle, and almost no coughing (mind you I work in a cigar shop surrounded by smoke all day)…By Wednesday there was no sign that I had ever been sick! This recipe worked like a magic potion. It appears that a man, who made his living in the land of the fakes, stumbled across something very real.

Back to basics

I am getting requests to do more musicality work shops and I plan on doing just that. Each time I have done on I have regretted not doing a refresher on basics. The only way to truly get your brain to switch from the patterns to the music count is by drilling those basics in to your bones so that you can switch to auto pilot with your body while your brain shifts to the music.  – See more at: http://www.mrjonathanismydj.com/#sthash.V5z3YB1N.dpuf
